If you’ve anything in common with the BSC Team, you’ll currently be amidst the struggle of a seemingly-perpetual holiday hangover that fails to fade away. There is no better time than now to start planning a stylish comeback to the land of the living. Investing in a denim collaboration seemed like the perfect plan to begin the New Year with, given that the soft denim feels & the rugged look will elevate the mood no matter where you are..
Bombay Shirt Company has collaborated with answr – premium indigo shirting by Udit T., to bring you six handpicked denim masterpieces in a mix of silky sateen solids and stretchy modal blends.
Udit, a designer by qualification and a problem solver by profession, founded answr, as a solution dedicated to bringing the best quality fabric to men’s clothing. He grew up seeing his dad wear a grey suit to office everyday & decided to change things to break the monotony. While living in the USA, he got interested in denim as work wear and decided to create his own style that would be unique. Moving back to Mumbai, he worked for months on researching denim and indigo before launching answr. “The denim I wore had to be unique. This is why I created answr, a fabric brand that embodies a unique touch” says Udit.
Washing was key to achieving variety. Having achieved an irresistible feel, it was key to finding a partner who could make the perfect fitting shirt with the fabric. “This was when we worked with Akshay – founder, Bombay Shirt Company, to handpick our favorite denim fabrics in a few solids, jacquard patterns in a vivid range of blues.”
Denim naturally fades with wear. In Japan, this is not only considered beautiful but also desirable. The coffee stains, the wrinkles from rolling up your sleeves at work, the fades on your shoulders from hours in the sun, will all be marks that make your shirt a unique reflection of what you do. Udit gives a pro-tip, “Don’t be afraid to wash your denim shirt, but take care, and don’t wash it with your whites. If you want the color to last longer, consider adding a splash of white vinegar while washing”.
Traditional denim is 100% cotton with an Indigo dyed warp and a raw white weft woven in a 2×1 twill weave. answr has developed a denim that is far softer and maximizes the indigo face of the fabric in a satin weave. Satin allows for the indigo to be on the face of the fabric giving it a flat silky surface and light sheen. To enhance the drape, this range contains fabric that is a blend of cotton and modal. The jacquards allow the polka dot and triangles to simultaneously fade with the fabric unlike a surface print that flakes off in the first few washes. “We’ve developed a dark raw wash, a mid wash and an ice wash to cover the different ranges of blue denim has to offer.”
Udit’s style advice on denim: “I like something loose and casual for a hot summer day, or my go-to for a dinner date is an ice-washed mandarin collar tucked in to a dark pair of jeans. At work, I like a denim on denim ensemble.”
